Selections from Documentaion and Analysis of the

Operation of the Mather Mill

The Mather Mill building is located in Flourtown along the Bethlehem Pike.  It's on the site of an earlier flour mill originally known as the Farmar Mill.   Both the mill and the residence of the 18th-Century owner operator, Samuel Morris, are a part of the Hope Lodge Historic Site (run by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission).

Molding profiles helped date construction and alterations.

Measured drawings were combined with other evidence to reconstruct location, size, and shape of the machinery.

A detailed insurance survey provided key information that could be tied to clues in the building itself.  Sometimes the size of the machinery and rooms were given, other times they could be calculated.  Even so, plenty of opportunities for future research and documentation remain.
